Respite Care - Information & Guidelines

Although we no longer provide a full residential programme we are, however able to offer short-term residential placements for those seeking respite care whilst engaging with/attending the Day Care Programme.

Rationale for Respite Placements

Because there are no funding issues involved, we are able to use the resource creatively and tailor placements to suit the individual need. The basic common denominator, however, is the need for supportive, alcohol-free accommodation whilst following an agreed Day Programme. The following situations are ones which we consider particularly appropriate.

Immediately following detoxification when someone may feel not quite ready to return home. During time spent in respite they are thus able to hopefully extend their period of sobriety whilst engaging with the programme and forming a new, non-drinking network.

Following a period of residential rehabilitation when the project may be used effectively as a "halfway house" to resettle into the community from a safe, stable base.

During periods of crisis or extra vulnerability for those clients already using the Day Care Service.

For Day Care clients who, whilst not needing detoxification, have been finding abstinence hard to achieve and would benefit from a period with more support and supervision.

In addition, because of the essentially temporary nature of the facility, we expect clients to have accommodation and retain it during their stay. Use of respite is always linked with continued involvement with the Day Care Programme so it is only usually indicated for those who live, or have links locally. It is not the aim for the accommodation to be used in isolation from an ongoing supportive programme.

Funding

Funding via Community Care is not relevant as we are no longer a Registered Home. On the rare occasion where Housing Benefit is applicable we will expect clients to apply for it. Otherwise we simply suggest a minimum contribution of £10 per week towards heating and lighting, plus a £50 deposit. Residents provide their own food, washing powder etc.

Referrals

First contact by telephone to determine the vacancy situation; we only have three beds so placements can be difficult. No official referral form is required but applicants will be asked to complete an "Application for Respite Stay" form which is available on request.

Length of Stay

This is negotiable according to individual's circumstances and needs. Regular reviews are conducted to re-assess the current situation and discuss any changes to the agreed programme.
